Before & After

Aaron & Amani's Awful to Artsy Condo Renovation

After 3 years renting cramped studio apartments my husband Aaron & I were itching to move and ready for a project. Most of the condos around here are generic vacation rentals with the old Hawaiian style furniture. We wanted a space that reflected us, modern, fun and open. We were close to getting our wish when we purchased a 2 bedroom condo- complete with pink carpet and sea foam green walls.
Five months of wading through the home buying process had us chomping at the bit to get started on the reno. Once we had the keys in hand we dove in head first.
We would be living in the condo during the make-over, so number one on the list was fixing up the master bedroom. The plan was to cram everything in there while we tackled the rest of the place. Not so easy, our first night at home delivered a bit of a shock when we pulled up the carpet and found moldy sub-flooring. After facing that head on with a gallon of bleach and some new wood, we were back on track. New paint (9 samples later) + new carpet= brand new room. We moved in our bed, piled in the boxes, and started leveling the living room floor and gutted the kitchen.
The space was really cut up, with half the room tile and half carpet. The kitchen jutted right out into the middle of the room. With a lot of vision and some back breaking labor we revamped the kitchen and chiseled out the tile piece by piece. It was a lot that work yielded great results. Our living space is now open with a nice united flow.
The last project was the bathroom. After everything we had been through- from moldy sub-floors to leaking ceilings when our neighbors water tank burst, to Aaron suffering from a bad knee injury, we were maxed out. We bribed my brother into moving to Hawaii with a one-way ticket for the work on our bathroom. A couple weeks later, it was new and clean bringing our condo revamp to a close. After 9 months of labor, we are finally enjoying the results.
